Rourkela City- A Steel world

Rourkela City - Towards the north of Sambalpur, 192 km, is a tribal heartland, the Sundargarh district and its undulating hills enriched with the deposits of valuable minerals. It remained virtually untouched of civilization till the time of setting up of the first public sector steel plant at Rourkela in 1955. Comprising of two former princely states of Gangpur and Bonai, the Sundergarh district enables one to have a glimpse of traditional tribal culture amidst the excitement of a modern settlement.
















Rourkela is a city located at 84.54E longitude and 22.12N latitude in Sundergarh district of Odisha at an elevation of about 219 meters above mean sea level. The area of Raurkela is 200 square kilometers approximately. The city is surrounded by a range of hills and encircled by Koel and Sankha rivers which meet at Vedvyas, Raurkela and flow as a single river called Brahmani. It has got one of the largest steel plants of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) is situated here named Rourkela Steel Plant. So, that the city is also popularly known as Ispat Nagar. It also has one of the National Institutes of Technology (NIT Rourkela) of the country. The Steel Township and Fertilizer Township are under the Steel Plant Administration while the other sections of the city are under the Raurkela Municipal Corporation. According to the census report of 2011 the population of Raurkela Industrial Township is 210,412 and Raurkela Town is 273,217 and the urban metropolitan area is 552,970.
